Essential Tools for Motion Graphics Designer

My name is Amin Kamis and I’m a freelance motion graphics designer, video editor (mostly I did online editing a lot), illustrator and character designer based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Previously, I have worked with post-production house, the no life job and mobile content company, the 9 to 6 job, the entrepreneurship, the corporate world. Before I graduate, I had tried pretty much everything until I really master the software the most I like: the Adobe products (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Flash, Dreamweaver) and Autodesk especially Maya and 3D Studio Max. This is to prepare me to the real world of working scenario and I have proof it that I could deliver the quality work that most experience people in creative industry did. It’s all about your passion and attitude and it’s not about how long you work in your industry. If you won any creative awards it’s a bonus point for you.

Since then, I made a lot of new friends and worked on many cool projects especially on iStockphoto.

Freelance work can be great fun, freedom, creativeness and challenging. However, if you want to compete with the experience people in the real world, you must master the tools before you graduate from any institution of higher learning. And start your freelance during your student day and start making some cool projects to impress the industry that you will work for them in the near future. In this modern hectic day, designers must use various kinds of available tools.

Here are the essential tools to help you success mainly for motion artist: -

Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator CS3
If you start with the previous CS product, it cannot cause you any problem to jump-start. Photoshop which is widely in use for manipulating, designing, creating and optimizing images for the web, print and video and rapidly style paging of mock up design for TV station ID if you are a motion artist and so on and so forth. The primary advantage the software renders is its ability to integrate between almost any of the Adobe products. Designers must know about this tool. Master it! Photoshop is a bitmap-based software while Illustrator is a vector-based software. Both are the must tool nowadays, whether you are from web, print or video industry. This software allows integration within the Adobe family product and that is why it was applied to any web, print and video industry.

Adobe After Effects CS3
Again if you know the previous version of After Effects, it’s very easy to jump-start. After Effects is mostly in use for motion graphics and compositing. I called this software a ‘blender’ because the way it integrates all other source of materials from design scratch, which are Photoshop, Illustrator and other image sequences. Without other sources from design scratch it cannot be as good as when you blend the sources. There is no avail at all, if you have a blender without a source of fruits to blend. So this is a must tool for motion artist. And to fully utilize this tool, you first must have a problem-solver skill; otherwise your design process cannot be well managed.

Adobe Flash CS3
As for motion artist, Flash can be your secondary tool set. When compared to After Effects, Flash cannot do a camera work but on the other hand, it can do a shape tweening and motion tweening very instantly. That’s the best trade. Now with CS3, After Effects user can convert their project into swf format for web-based animation.

3D software
As for motion artist, things that cannot be cheated in 3D environment in After Effects must be done in fully 3D environment in 3D software like Maya and 3D Studio Max. Me myself started with 3D Studio Max and then converted into Maya user. It’s a bonus point if the motion artist knows 3D skill. Again, this can be your secondary asset tool. The only downside of it is the render time you need to spend on it if you dealing with complex animation.
